As You Like It / Como Gustes: Tori Rice directs this bilingual adaptation by Mabelle Reynoso — a bold reimagining of Shakespeare's comedy of exile, found family, and reinvention, infused with Mexican/Chicano culture, lucha libre, and zoot-suit swagger. The Forest of Arden becomes a welcoming barrio alive with tienditas, pigeons, firulais, and a time period described as "yesterday." Translanguaged Spanish and Shakespearean English coexist side by side. Who do you become when you're forced out of the only world you knew? Como Gustes asks whose exile stories get told, and in whose language — then answers with community, masks, music, and a Rosalinda who refuses to be told who she is.

"As You Like It / Como Gustes" runs in repertory with "Twelfth Night," directed by Shana Wride.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

Max L.

I'd thought about writing a play before and didn't know how I could actually approach it. With Tori's guidance, the exercises, the supporting material, and the participation of the other students in the class, I learned how I could do this. in the end, I actually wrote two short plays and am submitting them to three places. Thank you, Tori, for opening up a new creative outlet for me.

You have the story, but who are the characters that make it dramatic, funny, and believable? With Tori's hyper-focused class on story structure and character, I am now equipped to write much better plays. I realized I was dropping characters into my stories that I didn't fully know, and appreciate. The exercises she has you do will blow your mind, and help you construct characters that make the story really come alive. Whether you're writing comedy , drama (or a bit of both) Tori's insight, tools and exercises help you develop a richer, more thought-provoking story

Tori does an excellent job at teaching how to write a play. As someone who is paralyzed by the thought of writing via a structured format, Tori encouraged me to write how I was most comfortable and then make the necessary refinements based on the structure. I felt supported, heard and safe in her class.

This workshop is a great intro for writers that want to learn how to develop a 10 minute play. The sessions with Tori were fun, dynamic and entertaining.
